PAINT Program
Producing Art In Neighborhoods Together

Center For Neighborhoods is pleased to announce the new PAINT Program! PAINT - Producing Art in Neighborhoods Together - will bring 12 neighborhoods and artists together to create new public art projects throughout Louisville Metro.

PAINT will embrace a neighborhood-based, grassroots approach to the creation of new site-specific public artwork. All PAINT projects will directly uphold and support Center For Neighborhoods' mission, vision, and values.

PAINT projects will be:

Focused on a Neighborhood - A district or locality, often with reference to its character or inhabitants, a political ward or precinct. The concept of a neighborhood includes geographic, social, cultural, civic, economic, and historical components.
Participatory - Marked by, requiring, or involving participation, especially affording the opportunity for individual participation.
Public - Open to the view of all; existing or conducted in public.
PAINT is a direct response to individual neighborhoods and residents who articulated, through the former Metro-supported Neighborhood Assessment public process, their desire to aesthetically and artistically improve their neighborhoods and increase community engagement. Over the past five years, Center for Neighborhoods conducted multiple Neighborhood Assessments through which 12 neighborhoods requested arts initiatives, branding and identity campaigns, and various types of beautification.

By Producing Art In Neighborhoods Together, the ideas and desires of residents in Louisville's diverse neighborhoods will be realized while strengthening the unique historical and cultural assets of our community.

Parkway Place
Weaving Unity Into Community

Center For Neighborhoods and fiber artist Pat Sturtzel are conducting a community-building public art project called "Weaving Unity Into Community."

The purpose of this youth-focused summer project is to execute a new public artwork by weaving a variety of different textile materials into a chain linked fence fronting the housing development, creating vibrant designs and beautifying the community. Prior to the project, a group of teen leaders are being trained to work with and supervise younger children participating in the weaving project.

Location
The Parkway Place (Parkhill) public housing community is located at 13th and Hill Streets. Location and headquarters for the project will be at the Parkhill Community Center, 1703 South 13th Street.

Sponsors
This project is funded by the Kentucky Arts Council and The Cralle Foundation. Thank you to our sponsors!

Phoenix Hill - Creativity Rising

Center For Neighborhoods and the PAINT program are pleased to announce our partnership with the Phoenix Hill Neighborhood Association on their upcoming project "Creativity Rising".

Funding - Creativity Rising is sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council and Metro Councilman David Tandy.

Grant Recipient - Phoenix Hill Neighborhood Association.

Artist-Partner - Aron Conaway, Curator.

In-Kind Support
In-kind support for the Creativity Rising project documentation, technical assistance, promotion, and marketing is provided by Center For Neighborhoods (with the support of Metro United Way) and The Green Building in partnership with filmmaker Stephen Kertis.

About "Creativity Rising"
Creativity Rising - a creative interaction with public art in the Phoenix Hill Neighborhood. This project aims to draw a closer relationship between the Phoenix Hill Neighborhood's arts district and area residents by integrating the two.

The neighborhood association and curator are commissioning 12 artists to create works for this project. The overall goal is to increase the neighborhood's visibility and strengthen connections between the gallery district and other "pocket communities" within the Phoenix Hill neighborhood. A unifying community celebration is taking place in September.

12 artists are being commissioned in a variety of mediums to create high-quality, site-specific works of public art across the Phoenix Hill Neighborhood. All 12 pieces will be installed outside, in the elements, on the sides of buildings or in open spaces. The work will stand for an indefinite period of time. At the end of one year, the neighborhood association and curator will access the condition of the work and whether or not it should be retired.

The 2nd Annual
Irish Hill Improv And History Festival

with The Louisville Improvisors

Special Guests

Improv Nashville

Metro Council Member Tom Owen
"A Brief History of Irish Hill."
Friday, August 21 & Saturday, August 22 - 8 PM
Walden Theatre
1123 Payne Street
$10.00 at the door.

In celebration of one Louisville's most interesting (yet often overlooked) neighborhood's, the Louisville Improvisors will present a living historical improv show based on Tom Owens talk, "A Brief History of Irish Hill."

Louisville Improvisors, Louisville's longest running improv company, established ensemble improvisation in Louisville 10 years ago. They have hosted the highly successful improv festival "Improvapalooza" for 9 years bringing some of the country's top improvisors to Louisville audiences. http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102654431753& ... NtmF0pUw==

Louisville Improvisors have always been committed to exploring and expanding the art form of improvisation by creating original concept and long form shows like, "Heaven or Hell", "Behind the Improv", and "Burnin' Love". And that's why they wanted to create a show based on the rich history and tradition of Irish Hill.

"We just thought it was about time Irish Hill got the love and attention it deserves," Alec Volz of the Louisville Improvisors said. "If Butchertown can be hip, why can't Irish Hill," said Chris Anger, (also of the Louisville Improvisors) "Irish Hill, it's not hip - it's real," added Louisville legend and LI member Todd Hildreth.

Also on the bill is Nashville Improv, Music City's first and only improv and sketch Comedy Theater. Just named "Best Improv Troupe 2008" by The Nashville Scene. Founded in 2005, Improv Nashville now boasts the area's best improvisers performing and sharing what they have been doing for years. Their cast members have performed in hundreds of shows in
troupes all over the country, and they take a mature approach to improvisation, focusing more on character and story than gags or gimmicks.

Clifton Community Garden featured on WHAS' Project Green

One of our local television stations, WHAS-TV, featured our Clifton Community Garden at Mercy SHV tonight on their Project Green program. WHAS-TV did a fine job! The segment was two minutes and twenty-eight seconds.

The reporter interviewed several of our folks:

Sister Ellen Curl, Mercy Sacred Heart Village
Gretchen Hunt with 3 year old Wilson and his little sister Jane; they live on Payne Street
John Varanese, of Varanese Restaurant on Frankfort Avenue
Sondra Powell, of Red Hot Roasters who donates coffee grounds and coffee beans from her coffee shop to be used in our compost bins.
YouthBuild Louisville. Students and staff of YouthBuild Louisville built our cedar raised garden beds and got the credit they so well deserve.

Click here to watch a clip of the Clifton Community Gardens on WHAS's Project Green.
